Greetings, all!
With season 1 of The Man From UNCLE mostly behind us (there will be one more episode from that season in the next UNCLE livetweet), I thought that now would be a good time to take a quick look at another program from the 60s spy show craze. The question was, which one? There are so many titles I want to look at, but few that I’d want to do as a one-off. What I needed was a show which I have no previous history with, yet one that I was interested in exploring. When I went through the titles, one name kept popping up: It Takes A Thief. It Takes A Thief stars Robert Wagner as Alexander Mundy, a master thief who ends up becoming a spy for the US government, in exchange for his freedom. It ran for three years (1968-1970), and it was one of the last spy genre shows produced. So with that in mind, I’m proud to announce that this week’s #Bond_age_TV livetweet event will be both the pilot and last episodes of It Takes A Thief. So join us this Wednesday, May 7th at 9:00pm EST for the It Takes A Thief livetweet! Be sure to use the #TakesAThief hashtag!
Hope to see you there!

In our second Man From UNCLE episode, “The Brain-Killer Affair,” Napoleon and Ilya race to prevent valuable UNCLE information from being drained out of Mr. Waverly via an evil THRUSH device. They must contend with brutal THRUSH agents and an empty-brained goon with a hammer. Luckily, they have Yvonne Craig and Rosie Grier on their side. Enjoy the mission report!

This past Wednesday, the boys and girls of #Bond_age_TV got together to enjoy some more fun times with The Man From UNCLE. First off, we watched as Napoleon Solo, trapped behind the iron curtain, battled THRUSH agents, a nationalist superspy, and annoying American teenagers, to get important information back to UNCLE. It was “The Dove Affair,” and a good time was had by all! Enjoy the field report!

With the pilot episodes of Man From UNCLE firmly behind us, #Bond_age_TV now heads into the series proper, starting with season 1.
It was never my intention with these live tweets to do every single episode of the show, as that would be too time consuming. My plan is to focus on the two-parter episodes from the series, as those were the ones which were later redone as feature films. Season 1, however, had no two-parters. Instead, the feature films were made from the Solo pilot (featured last session), and from episode 8 of season 1, “The Double Affair” (released as “The Spy With My Face” in 1965.) So “The Double Affair” was always on the program. Joining it this week on the #Bond_age_TV live tweet session is the episode that immediately followed it, “The Project Strigas Affair.”
“The Project Strigas Affair” is notable for its guest cast, which included William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy working together almost two years before Star Trek. So, this Wednesday, I hope you’ll join #Bond_age_TV in live tweeting these fun episodes starting at 9pm EST, using the hashtag #Bond_age_TV.

As the originator of #Bond_age_TV, I’m really excited to get started on what I hope will be a very entertaining run of live tweets as we spotlight The Man From UNCLE.
As Bond films started hitting the big screen in the US during the early 60’s, TV networks sought to fill their programming schedule with as many spy shows as they could get their hands on. Homegrown shows like I Spy, Get Smart, and Mission:Impossible shared the airwaves with UK imports like The Avengers, The Saint and Secret Agent. Everyone wanted to jump on the spy show bandwagon.
Norman Felton, one of the men behind The Man From UNCLE, came up with the idea of asking Bond creator Ian Fleming to develop some ideas. Fleming agreed, and came up with a concept and a character: Napoleon Solo. This did not sit well with the Bond producers, as their next film, Goldfinger, also featured a character named Solo. Eventually, both sides were able to come to an agreement, and Napoleon Solo was allowed to keep his name, but the pilot needed retooling. Solo became The Man From UNCLE.
When UNCLE finally aired in 1964 (the original pilot was shot in 1963), the two stars, Robert Vaughn and David McCallum, became worldwide celebrities. It became so popular around the world, in fact, that MGM had several of the episodes re-edited into feature films (usually by including more adult situations), and released around the world (except, curiously, the United States, where only 2 of the 8 films were shown theatrically.) The show did have some issues, however, mostly behind the scenes. The key problem the show faced was that it lacked cohesive direction. Storylines went from serious to the idiotic and everywhere in between. It had at least 5 showrunners over 4 seasons, and the ratings showed that the audience wasn’t there anymore. It was cancelled in 1968. Despite the short run, however, it remains one of the best programs from the 60’s spy craze. That, along with its ties to Fleming, makes it the perfect choice for #Bond_age_TV’s first longterm live tweet project.
With UNCLE episodes available both in the original aired versions and feature film versions, it was difficult to decide which version to use for the live tweets. Taking a page from @007hertzrumble, though, I decided that we’ll do both. The first run will be the original episodes (with various imposters and icons in between), and the second run will be the theatrical versions. This brings us to this Wednesday’s live tweet. There are actually 3 versions of the pilot in existence: the 1963 Solo pilot, the 1964 aired pilot, and a theatrical version (To Trap A Spy). The theatrical version will wait until the second run.
Wednesday, March 12th we’ll be showing the 70-minute Solo pilot at 9pm EST, followed by the 50-minute version at 10:20pm. Hope you’ll join us for some great #Bond_age_TV with the Man from UNCLE Pilots! Follow #Bond_age_TV hashtag.
