Hello again, everyone!
As you know, I’ve put The Avengers and Hawaii Five-0 on semi-permanent hiatus. It was a hard choice to make, as those shows are near and dear to my heart. Unfortunately, they never really picked up any traction, so I decided it was best to give them a rest. They may be back someday, but for now, Remington Steele will pick up the #Bond_age_TV banner. This, however, left me with a problem: how to fill this week’s #Bond_age_ slot? Well, not one to rest on my laurels, I thought an experiment was in order, and so I finally felt the time had come to try out a genre I’ve been wanting to try: the Mexican Wrestling film.
Luchadores are to Mexico as James Bond is to Britain; they’re icons. And none are as iconic as the legendary Luchadore El Santo. First wrestling in 1942, El Santo (The Saint) proved to be not just a strong wrestler, but a cultural phenomenon. He brought Lucha Libre to untold levels of international exposure. When not wrestling in the ring, El Santo could also be found on TV and in the movies. His career led to an explosion of Mexican Wrestling films (including one of my all time favourites, La Mujere Murcielago). This week’s #Bond_age_ feature is from the latter part of his career. El Santo finds himself working for Interpol, seeking to stop a group of Nazis from harnessing the secret of mind control. He finds himself dealing with various dangers, including girls in bikinis and sharks! The fun starts at 9 pm EST this Wednesday, and it will be using the #Bond_age_ hashtag. Feel free to also include #ElSanto in your tweets. Fair warning: the movie isn’t dubbed, and there are no subtitles. I think, though, the pictures will speak for themselves. I hope you’ll join me!
Here’s the movie. Watch with us, will you?

Mission: Impossible 4 aka Ghost Protocol was the first M:I film I didn’t see in the theater. I don’t know why exactly. It had been 5 years since M:I 3. Maybe I just forgot. Busy Christmas season and all that. I do know I fixed that oversight as soon as the movie was released on DVD. I watched it two times in two days to make up for the errors of my ways. Directed by Brad Bird (best known for his work with Pixar) Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol was a dose of action adrenaline I hadn’t seen in ages. A balls out spectacle with unforgettable stunts and true supporting cast. Sure, the supporting cast had been used to good measure in past M:Is but this time the movie felt like a true ensemble. And despite the bazillion dollar budget and flash and glam of a true Hollywood blockbuster, Ghost Protocol felt like Mission: Impossible. Same, but totally and completely different. And how often can you say that a film series peaks with the 4th entry? Get back to me on that.
Let’s continue our Mission: Impossible film series retrospective live tweet series with this 2011 entry — Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Should you not own a copy of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, I will provide an embed right here on this website. The embed will go live at 8:00pm ET and go down immediately after the live tweet.

Maybe if there’d been time we could have done a double feature with this Goldie Hawn classic:

Next week on #Bond_age_!
If we’re being completely honest here, I haven’t seen Mission: Impossible 3 since the theater. I owned the DVD… until Vudu gave me a HD copy for free. I like free stuff. Let’s not considering that a damning comment. I remember attending M:I3 out of series obligation. It had been 6 years since the prior outing and who was this J.J. Abrams guy and who stole all of Tom Cruise’s sunglasses and bitchin’ sunglasses? I had questions. I remember leaving the theater pleasantly surprised. But back to the honesty part… I don’t remember why, now, all these years later. I remember thinking “low-key competency,” like that’s a thing in a summer blockbuster. My opinion in the interim ten years has been replaced by Internet hearsay and Tweet-speak. I’ve been reminded that it’s a TV movie. I’ve also been told that it’s the underrated gem of the series. I’ve been told that it’s the toilet paper that Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol uses to wipe its collective arse. I’m paraphrasing here.
But no matter how you slice it, we here at #Bond_age_ aim to live tweet all of the Mission: Impossibles and we’re darn sure going to follow through on our promise (threat?) to our constituents. Plus, I seem to recall Philip Seymour Hoffman being the bad guy. That seems pretty great, am I right?

PS: Mission: Impossible 3 features Maggie Q. That I definitely remember.
